Instagram Travel Thursday: Hillsborough, NC

With early Fall comes some great area Festivals that are perfect for getting out and enjoying the cooler, drier weather. There are several events happening in Raleigh this weekend which will keep downtown busy and fun.

But, if you are looking to enjoy a little day trip somewhere new, consider Hillsborough this Saturday. The annual Fresh Roots Festival will be happening, with adult and kid friendly events to keep you busy all day long!

"We invite you to join us for a day of activities scattered around our Historic Downtown District and in West Hillsborough at Hillsborough Station. Activities begin at 10am and will last until 8pm. See our tent on the Courthouse lawn for a schedule of events, map and more information on Saturday!"

Hillsborough NC is the home to Mystery Brewing, a leader in the craft beer industry, especially here in North Carolina. The Pub House is a great spot to stop in and try a pint (or two!). Unique, hardy and exquisite beers are worth the stop. Saturday they will be hosting the beer and wine garden for the festival.

Several local restaurants will be participating in a Spring Feast Menu at the festival for a celebration of some amazing dining featuring food collaborations with local farmers.

Hillsborough is a great place to discover some great shops and restaurants and live music! Saturday there will be several Yep Roc artists performing live on the Courthouse lawn in the afternoon. One of our personal favorites who we have followed for years will be one of these performers so we plan on parking ourselves on the lawn early to catch Josh Rouse live! He is currently living in Spain so it's a rare and amazing opportunity to catch him in person in NC. Yep Roc is also headquartered in Hillsborough and one of the sponsors of the Festival.

So, Saturday, get out and enjoy an amazing day trip to Hillsborough. Join us. On the lawn.

Instagram Thursday: Exploring Local

"Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living." -- Miriam Beard

As I sit here this morning with my coffee, I recall last September when friends from Australia were finally making their dream a reality with trips here to the United States. We were fortunate enough to meet up with both sets of friends on both sides of the country in one month. That last September was awesome because we had a trip to NYC and a trip to San Francisco, two of my favorite cities. But it wasn't just about traveling to those amazing cities, it was catching up with life-long friends we dearly miss from our days when we lived on the other side of the planet, in Australia. I love to travel and if I had the ability, honestly, I'd probably have a trip planned to some new amazing place almost every month.

But reality is, life gets in the way, and sometimes you can only dream about when you'll get around to that special destination.

I made a decision when I started blogging to channel that "need to explore great destinations and be somewhere different" into exploring new local, closer destinations.  Whether it's a new coffee shop, brewery, or restaurant, a new exhibit at the local museum or a fun festival downtown, there's always somewhere new to be that can take you away from the routine of our every day lives, even if it's just for a few minutes. I chose to try and capture a little of that whenever I can mixed in with my reality of work, kids, schedules and chores! We often get out around Raleigh to see what's new and revisit old favorites.

I think we are lucky to live in a city like Raleigh that is growing and evolving every day, yet still easy to access with plenty to do, spend time with friends and family and make some fabulous memories.

Instagram Travel Thursday: OBX, NC

This past weekend we spent four wonderfully relaxing days in the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. We stayed in the Northern Beaches of OBX area. That includes Carova, Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. The weather was perfect and the summer crowds had faded away nicely, making for a wonderfully relaxed destination. It was great to slow things down and enjoy the amazing beauty of some of North Carolina's most beautiful coastal shores.

We stayed at the recently renovated and beautiful Sanderling Resort in Duck. The Sanderling has been an OBX destination for many for  years, and with the renovated resort,  offers up new pools and restaurants, great outer banks location, and easy access to some stunning beaches. The resort is easy to get to,  and  close to the quaint town of Duck for shopping, dining and outdoor activities.

Enjoyed some wonderful beach time and necessary shade under the umbrellas on the Sanderling beach.

There are two new pools at the resort. The Tranquility pool offers a heated lap pool for adults only and the resort pool is perfect for young families. There is also an indoor pool near the spa.

Easy access to boogie boards, paddle boards and bikes on the resort.

Biking is a great way to get around in Duck

Dinner and drinks at the renovated LifeSaving Station Restaurant and  No. 5 Bar and Lounge. The Sanderling also offers fine cuisine at Kimball's Kitchen (formerly the Left Bank), casual beach dining at the Sandbar. and the Beach House Bar in the lobby of the main house.

Enjoyed a fabulous cup (or two) of coffee each morning on the beach. The coffee station was set up each morning close to our room.  Perfect.

Easy access to some great boardwalks along the sound side in Duck.

Duck Donuts are an Outer Banks treat and not to be missed! Served fresh and hot!

Coffee, snacks and books at Duck's Cottage.

Stunning wildflowers

Our daily camp on Sanderling Beach!

Great beaches for strolling and catching amazing, peaceful sunrises.

We spent one evening in Kill Devil Hills, catching a beautiful sunset on Jockey's Ridge State Park after climbing up the sand dunes. These are the tallest natural sand dunes on the East coast. The kids were amazed. Stunning views and great night spent with some friends who were also vacationing in the area.

Getting a history lesson at the Wright Brothers Memorial and museum.

Be sure and catch the Bodie Lighthouse on your way in our out of the OBX area. This lighthouse was just recently renovated and open to the public for the first time.
