NC Fresh Fruit & Vegetables Delivered to the Door - The Produce Box

One of the best things about summer is fresh delicious local produce! I have a fruit/vegetable stand nearby but it is limited and getting to the Farmer's Market is not always easy to do with busy schedules. I prefer to buy from local farms and sometimes options are limited (and expensive) at my local grocery stores.

Last week I got to try out The Produce Box, a locally owned Raleigh business that delivers boxes of fresh produce along with other select local items like meats, cheeses, and much more. The Produce Box releases a menu on Fridays with what's currently in season and available and you can specify what you would like delivered or you can choose one of their prepacked boxes. Once you order, the box is delivered to your doorstep weekly!

Ordering/Pricing: There are several types of boxes to choose from that generally feed 3-4 people. (The box we received was called the Sprout Box and it's a smaller box for 1-2 people). You can go online and select your box and what you want in your box. All items are from local NC farms all over the state and boxes are affordable and arrive weekly but are easy to skip if you are traveling or have other things happening. There are additional produce and artisan menus that you can add to your box (for an additional cost). There is a one time membership fee of $18.

What was in my box: My box arrived at the front door and contained sweet summer corn, blueberries, tomatoes, cantaloupe, yellow squash, zucchini, green pepper and potatoes. A nice variety of fruit and vegetables. Everything was ripe and ready to eat. We cooked up the corn, tomatoes and the squash that night for dinner. The cantaloupe was super ripe (the kids enjoyed that) and the blueberries were delicious with our breakfast yogurt and snacking.  My potatoes are still in the kitchen and I will probably add those to our dinner tonight when we grill out.

My thoughts overall: Can't really beat the convenience of local produce delivered to the door, good pricing and options to add or change items in the box is a bonus. Also the option to skip over a week when traveling or perhaps a time of year when the produce is not likely to be the family's favorites. I'd be interested in trying cheeses and meats and other local products as well. The website offers up lots of recipes if you want healthy and creative suggestions on how to use your produce. Shortens my grocery list at the store and allows me to support local farmers and artisans, which is something we as a family are passionate about.
