Beer & BBQ: A Fresh New Addition to Glenwood South at View Bar

Bloggers, BBQ & Beer!

BBQ: I was thrilled to be included in this blogger "Meatup" Tuesday night, sponsored by Big Mike's BBQ at View Bar at 610 Glenwood Avenue (very close to Peace Street). Big Mike's BBQ is a well known local Food Truck that has been around for a while serving up delicious BBQ in the Triangle. Recently, Mike has expanded his BBQ and other food offerings by partnering with The View Bar on Glenwood Avenue South, providing the food menu there, allowing him more opportunities to serve his food. If you are looking for great BBQ dishes, you need to make a stop by the View Bar soon.

BEER: Triangle Brewing Company from Durham was there as well and it was fun listening to Doc  talk about their different beers, the history of Triangle Brewing and how he has the greatest job in the world (no kidding!).

I am not an NC native, so I have only recently started to really appreciate the NC BBQ experience. Not only was their BBQ fantastic and very tasty but their specialty sauces were amazing for dipping the BBQ pork and chicken! I've also learned to taste the BBQ before you douse it with sauce. You won't regret it. I was thrilled to try some of Mike's delicious additional offerings such as Redneck Nachos, Fatty Fries, Smoked Wings and Beef Brisket (it's the perfect menu for LATE NIGHT munchies on Glenwood South!).

We tasted six food/drink pairings, each dish uniquely matched with one of Triangle Brewing Company's beers. The match-ups were good and two standouts for me were the Habanero Pale Ale that left a little spicy burn at the back of your throat but not over powering and well matched with the BBQ pork and sauces. Delicious. My other favorite (since I am a hop head) was the IPA. I was ready for a full pint of that one!

Beer and food pairings/tastings/dinners have become popular in Raleigh and the Triangle between locally owned restaurants and breweries and is a fun, creative way to experience great beer and great food and learn local specialties and hear their stories.

These pairings really personalize the food and drink and make you want to come back and bring your friends and family! Plus there's a lot of fun to be had by hanging out with like-minded folks who appreciate good food and good beer.

I admit, I also love any chance to get together with some amazing local area experts such as Kristen/Gadabout Food (and coordinator, thank you!), John/Triangle Explorer, Art/The Wandering Sheppard, Leigh/Hines-Sight Blog, Ron/Foodalicious Follies, WRAL Out and About, Stacey/CookEatLife , NC Beer Guys and Tonia/Triangle 411.

When are we doing this again?

Instagram Travel Thursday: NC vs. Oahu, Hawaii - A House Divided

As I write this, we are currently buried in six inches of snow with a nice layer of crunchy ice on top and another possible five inches to arrive today! No, I do not live in MN, I live in Raleigh, NC! It's been a wet and snowy winter which hasn't been the norm for us in many years. To add insult to injury, as I freeze and have kids home from school AGAIN, my husband happens to be on a business trip in Oahu, Hawaii! Talk about being "polar" opposites right now (no pun intended)!

As I post my wintry mix of Instagram photos online, he is simultaneously posting his of warm, sunny, tropical beaches. I thought I'd share a few of both of our quite different Instagram takes during the same week.

I have to say I'd love to be on one of those beaches right about now. Those beautiful surfer waves and tropical views are making me long for sunnier, warmer days. At the same time, the cold, snowy, icy weather has forced us to stay inside, relax, get a few projects done, enjoy hot chocolate and movies and generally take some time off from the rat race. So which do I prefer?

Oh, who am I kidding??

Merrimon-Wynne House Grand Opening!

Located in the heart of historic Raleigh, the Merrimon-Wynne House celebrated its Grand Opening this past Friday night in downtown Raleigh!  The Merrimon-Wynne House is a historic Raleigh home that was moved in 2008 and recently completed a six month renovation at its new location at 500 North Blount Street. Merrimon-Wynne House offers a premier Raleigh downtown venue space for weddings and other special events.  Located on the corner of Blount and Polk Streets, it's on the same street as the Governor's Mansion.  The house itself was built in 1876. You can read more about the history of the house on their website.

We arrived to see the house beautifully lit up and filled with people enjoying the evening. The house was warm and inviting with beautifully displayed flower and candle arrangements, and delicious hors d'oeuvres from Donovan's Dish, a Raleigh based Catering Company.  The fabulous Sidecar Social Club , a local jazz ensemble, provided the perfect live music and ambiance inside the house while Joe Bunn DJ Company kept the music and the party going in the tent that was setup outside the house.

Grounds
provided great coffee and The Cupcake Shoppe featured tasty and beautiful treats wrapped up and ready to take home with us after the party.

This venue will be busy nearly every weekend in 2014 hosting weddings and other special events. The rooms are spacious and set up to provide a stunning backdrop to any special occasion event, especially weddings. The venue is designed to provide for up to 200 guests. The house features modern bathrooms, a catering kitchen, large open main floor and beautiful outdoor decks.

The location of the house and grounds allow for Merrimon-Wynne House to fill a unique special event niche by offering this exciting new venue in downtown Raleigh. Its great to see Raleigh breathing new life into its own historic features and rejuvenating the city by connecting back to its own special part of history.
