New Kid on the Block - Oro Restaurant

We celebrated a birthday last Saturday night with dinner out downtown Raleigh. We decided to try out one of the newest restaurants on the block, Oro Restaurant located in the RBC Plaza building at the corner of Martin and Wilmington Streets. The restaurant has a tapas theme, serving lots of different options on small plates. Even the entrees are served in small portions but allowed us to order and try many different things. And we did!!
Some of the small plate apps we tried first were the truffle mac and cheese, fried soft shell crab, shrimp dumplings, veggie spring rolls, three bean cake and red and golden beet salad. Standouts were the soft shell crab, spring rolls, three bean cake and beet salad.

The beet salad was served with goat cheese and watermelon which was a refreshing and tasty combination and the three bean cake was crispy and delicious. We had a group of six (including two tweens). The kids favorite was the meatball flat bread, dumplings (new food for them!) and peanut sauce covered chicken skewers. They weren't thrilled with the mac and cheese though and that probably wasn't one of my favorites either. For   mains we tried, sizzling catfish with crispy rice and black bean sauce (very tasty!), braised pork, and filet mignon. The filet was the right portion and the sake brine and crispy onion rings were just the right addition.

Service was good but felt like they were still working things out. Sometimes there seemed to be more wait staff then guests circling around, but all very attentive. I think since they are still so new, this will all work itself out over time. They are high tech as well, using iPads to take our orders.  Atmosphere is great and offers a nice street view from both levels of the restaurant. Open, light and airy and I personally love the all white decor and modern simple elegance. LOVE the fact that the only beers on tap were local drafts. Plenty of wine and drink options as well. The place was full by the time we left.

Will we be back? More then likely we will be back to Oro. Great to have some cool, modern places like this that make you think "big city".
